The mission of the Capital Jazz Society is to produce jazz events and to provide educational opportunities where students and professionals can learn from one another. Since its nonprofit designation in 2002, the Capital Jazz Society has presented hundreds of live jazz events in Lincoln, Nebraska. In 2019, the Capital Jazz Society was awarded a Mayors Arts Award for Outstanding Arts Organization through the Lincoln arts Council for our efforts in educational outreach.
The Capital Jazz Society was created by musicians who saw a need in Lincoln, Nebraska for regular live jazz opportunities, where they are allowed to play what they like without any musical restraints or constrictions. With events presented every Monday night free of charge, this need is being fulfilled, and a great number of Nebraskas finest jazz musicians are involved. The Capital Jazz Society is committed to promoting jazz of the highest quality.
The Monday Night Big Band (MNBB) was conceived in the finest of big band traditions started years ago by Thad Jones and Mel Lewis at the Village Vanguard in New York City. This tradition is now being carried out in many cities through the United States. The musicians playing in the group vary each week and include many of the top local professional jazz musicians in the area. The directors include Dean Haist and Bob Krueger. Members of the MNBB experience the opportunity to play traditional and new big band jazz music in a relaxed professional setting. In addition to the professional musicians we hire to perform, several local jazz students gain the experience of playing on a regular basis with the band sitting side-by-side with professionals on their instrument.
