Matt Niess, has appeared as a soloist, clinician, and adjudicator at numerous jazz festivals, universities and schools throughout the country. These venues include The Midwest Band and Orchestra Clinic, Disney World, Disney Land, IAJE, ITA, MENC, PMEA, VMEA, ETW, University of Las Vegas, University of North Texas, University of Wisconsin at Whitewater, University of Kentucky, University of Texas at Arlington, Augustana College, Mary Washington College, University of Nebraska—Omaha, Towson University, Shenandoah University, Longwood College, Susquehanna University, West Chester University, University of Tennessee, Shepherd College, University of West Virginia, and James Madison University.

As a sideman, he has performed with Ray Charles, Natalie Cole, The Temptations, Joe Piscopo, Diane Shuur, Joan Rivers, Merv Griffin, Mel Torme, Frank Sinatra Jr., The Four Tops, The Ink Spots, The Mills Brothers, The Manhattan Transfer, Shirley Jones, Pia Zadora, The Smithsonian Masterworks Orchestra, The Rob Parton Jazz Tech Big Band, The Gene Krupa Orchestra, Slide Hampton, The Metropolitan Jazz Orchestra.



The Nebraska Jazz Orchestra was founded in 1975 and performs throughout Nebraska and the Midwest.  Tours to Europe have included England, France, Germany, Scotland, and a 1997 performance at the prestigious Montreux International Jazz Festival in Montreux, Switzerland.

Rules, Guidelines & Eligibility

•  Open to musicians who have not reached their 22nd birthday on or before January 16, 2008.
• Instrumentation:  Saxophones (Alto/Tenor/Baritone), Trumpets, Trombones, Piano, Bass, Drums, Guitar
• Selected musicians must furnish transportation, instruments (except piano)
• If selected, musicians MUST be available for the following:

REHEARSAL:  Sunday, January 6, 2008, 3:00 p.m. -5:00 p.m., O’Donnell Auditorium, Nebraska Wesleyan University, Lincoln
REHEARSAL:  Tuesday, January 15, 2008, 5:00 p.m.-6:30 p.m., O’Donnell Auditorium, Nebraska Wesleyan University, Lincoln
CONCERT: Wednesday, January 16, 2008, 7:30 p.m. @ The Embassy Suites Hotel, 1240 P Street, Lincoln

How To Apply:

•  A completed printed copy of the PDF below and a $5.00 non-refundable application fee must be submitted to Nebraska Jazz Orchestra

•  Make checks payable to Nebraska Jazz Orchestra

•  Applications must be postmarked by Wednesday, November 1, 2007.

•  Upon receiving your application, the NJO will send audition music to you.

 

The Audition Process:

•  When you receive your audition music, prepare a recorded audition (Cassette or CD) and send it to the NJO.  Please include the following:

a.  Chromatic scale over the entire range of the instrument
b. 
Prepared piece supplied by the NJO                           
c. 
Improvised solo*  Optional, but highly recommended!   

*Can be 3-5 choruses of blues, or 2-3 choruses of a well-known standard, with live or recorded accompaniment, such as Jamey Aebersold.

•  Please include a note or announce what piece you have selected

•  Audition materials must be postmarked no later than Friday, December 1, 2007.  Materials will be returned if you provide a self-addressed return envelope with sufficient postage.

•  Audition results will be mailed to you by December 21, 2007.
