The Nebraska Jazz Camp gives participants the opportunity to work one-on-one with professional jazz musicians who are well-known regionally and nationally. Students will take part in a full week of intensive master classes, including Jazz Improvisation & Theory, Standard Jazz Literature, and Electronic Music. They will also participate in big bands, combos, and jam sessions, as well as attending local jazz performances and fun social events off-campus. The Nebraska Jazz Camp is open to all musicians 7th grade & up. General Camp Information Facilities: The Nebraska Jazz Camp is housed in the Rogers Fine Arts Center on the campus of Nebraska Wesleyan University, an air-conditioned facility containing the 1500-seat O’Donnell Auditorium, 250-seat Emerson Recital Hall, 35 practice rooms, composition and computer lab facilities, and Elder Art Gallery. Arrival & Departure: Camp registration is Monday, July 21 from 12:00 noon to 12:30 pm in the lobby of the Rogers Center for Fine Arts at 50th & Huntington Avenue. At this time all students will receive a schedule, dorm assignments (if needed), and other appropriate information. The final day of camp is Friday, July 25, with dorm check-out by 1:00 pm. Deadlines & Refunds: Registration deadline is Monday, July 3, 2007. An additional $30 late fee will be charged after this date. The $75 application deposit is non-refundable. Balance of fees is refundable in full before June 13. No refunds will be given after this date. Performance: Students will have the opportunity to play in small & large groups during the week. Family, friends, and community members are welcome to attend the Big Band concert on Thursday, July 24 at 4:30 pm in O’Donnell Auditorium and the Jazz Combo Concert on Friday, July 25 at 2:00 pm. These concerts will be a culmination of the camp where students can show off their enhanced jazz skills. Scholarships: A limited number of full and partial scholarships are available based on financial need. Please contact the NJO business office for information. Housing & Meals: On-campus housing is available in air-conditioned Centennial Hall and meals are available in the Student Center cafeteria. Meals and housing are included in the fees for residents during the week from Monday afternoon to Friday afternoon. Rooms have either one or two twin beds. Commuting participants are responsible for their own meals and housing. Individual meals can be purchased in the Student Center Cafeteria, or there are a number of restaurants within easy walking distance of the campus. What to bring: Before camp, you will need to purchase The Real Easy Book ('C' Edition), published by Sher. These books are available at the downtown Dietze Music House in Lincoln for about $20.00. Residents need to supply their own towels, washcloths, and bedding (pillow, sheets, blankets). All participants should bring their own instruments including drums and bass. Pianos will be available for participant use in practice rooms and during performances. Bring one or more fake books if you have them. Camp attire will be casual clothing for all events except the final concert. Final concert attire is a nice shirt and pants for gentleman and a dress or nice outfit for ladies. 2008 Camp Faculty & Guest Artists Dean Haist, Camp Director, is a freelance trumpet player in Lincoln, plays lead trumpet with the Nebraska Jazz Orchestra (NJO), and serves as the director of jazz studies at Nebraska Wesleyan University. Scott Vicroy, woodwinds & jazz history, plays with the NJO and is a busy freelance musician, performing regularly with Blue House. Scott is also a member of the saxophone quartet, Group Sax. Mark Benson, woodwinds, is a teacher of instrumental music at Mission Middle School in Bellevue, Nebraska. Mark is an active freelance musician and has performed with acts such as the Temptations, the Omaha Big Band, and the NJO. Brian Grasmick, trumpet & trumpet & music technology, is a freelance musician, having toured the world for years on numerous cruise ships. He is currently producing recordings for various artists in Las Vegas. Pete Madsen, trombone, is the director of Jazz Studies at the University of Nebraska-Omaha and is a Getzen artist/clinician. He has played with Bill Watrous, Pete Christlieb, and Aretha Franklin, along with numerous regional and national groups. Tom Harvill, piano, is a busy freelance player in the Lincoln and Omaha jazz scene. Tom has performed with numerous jazz greats and is also an expert in the field of computer technology. Joey Gulizia, percussion, has been involved in music education for over 30 years. He has conducted hundreds of residencies, workshops and clinics for students of all ages. In 1994 he was given the "Excellence in Education" award by the Governor of Nebraska, and was inducted in the "Nebraska Music Hall of Fame" in 2001. Jerry Devore , bass, has performed with notable jazz artists, such as Wynton Marsalis, Frank Mantooth, and Curtis Fuller. He is an Artist Endorser for Bad End Speakers and heads the Music Technology program at Iowa Western Community College.
