LINCOLN MUNICIPAL BAND ANNOUNCES WINNER AND RUNNER-UP OF THE 2009 JOHN SHILDNECK YOUNG ARTIST COMPETITION

Lincoln, NE -The Lincoln Municipal Band is pleased to announce the winner and runner-up of the 16th Annual John Shildneck Young Artist Competition. The first place winner, Jaime Tyser, trumpet, will receive a $400 prize and will perform a solo with the Lincoln Municipal Band at the John Shildneck Memorial Bandshell in Antelope Park on Sunday, July 12, 2009, where she will also be recognized in the program. The runner-up this year is Seth McKenzie, percussion. Seth will receive a $100 prize and recognition in the July 12th program. This performance will kick off the Summer Concert Series for the Lincoln Municipal Band. The concert starts at 7:00 PM and admission is free. Please join the Lincoln Municipal Band and the citizens of Lincoln and surrounding areas to recognize Jaime and Seth for their outstanding accomplishments.
First place winner Jaime Tyser is a senior trumpet performance major at the UMKC Conservatory of Music and Dance - Kansas City, MO. Jaime is currently principal trumpet of the Kansas City Youth Symphony, associate principal of UMKC Conservatory Orchestra, and is on the substitute list for Lincoln's Symphony Orchestra and the Plymouth Brass. Jaime has played with the Seward Municipal Band, was an extra trumpet for the Kansas City Civic Orchestra, and was involved in the summer outdoor musical productions, Crazy for You and CATS, at Pinewood Bowl. She was a finalist for the Lincoln Municipal Band Young Artist Competition in 2007, won the Lincoln Symphony Orchestra Young Artist Competition in 2008, and recently was a semi-finalist for the National Trumpet Competition in Virginia. Originally from Lincoln, Jaime graduated of from Lincoln East High School. She has studied trumpet under Thomas Kelly, 2nd Trumpet for the Lincoln Symphony and currently Dr. Keith Benjamin, Professor trumpet at UMKC. Next fall, Jaime will attend the Conservatory of Music at Lynn University in Boca Raton, Florida to pursue her masters in performance under the study of Marc Reese, Empire Brass and professor of trumpet at Lynn.
Runner-up Seth McKenzie is a sophomore at the University of Nebraska at Omaha where he is pursuing degrees in music education and percussion performance. Currently he performs in the UNO Marching Mavericks Marching Band, University Band, Heartland Philharmonic Orchestra, Symphonic Wind Ensemble, Chamber Orchestra, Percussion Ensemble and the UNO Hockey Band. A graduate of Millard South High School and recipient of the Most Outstanding Musician Award, Seth was a member of Marching Band, Wind Ensemble, Symphonic Band, Jazz Band and Orchestra. He has studied percussion under Rex Barker, Millard South High School and currently Dr. Tomm Roland, University of Nebraska at Omaha.
Other finalists in the competition were clarinetist John Borstelmann, Lincoln, who attends Lincoln Southeast High School, and trombonist Paul Niedbalski, Kearney, who attends the University of Nebraska at Kearney.
