Paul Haar is Assistant Professor of Saxophone and Jazz Studies at the University of Nebraska- Lincoln School of Music where he teaches applied saxophone and directs UNL Jazz Ensemble I. Prior to his appointment in 2004, Dr. Haar held positions at the University of Tennessee, the University of Texas at Austin and the University of Kansas.

Specializing in a variety of aspects of saxophone performance and pedagogy, Dr. Haar maintains an active career as a soloist, clinician and adjudicator, appearing throughout the United States and Canada.

He has performed with such artists as Dave Brubeck, James Moody, The Manhattan Transfer, Toshiko Akiyoshi, Donald Brown, and has backed such noted entertainers as the Temptations, The Chiffons, 5 by Design, Jerry Lewis and Bob Newhart. He has recorded on the Sea Breeze label (as a member of the Boulevard Big Band) with vocalist Kevin Mahogany and saxophonist Eric Marienthal.

In addition to being an active member of the North American Saxophone Alliance, Music Educators National Conference and the International Association for Jazz Education, Dr. Haar serves as the personal director for the annual IAJE conference and is a member of the editorial board for the Jazz Educators Journal. A contributing writer to The Saxophone Journal and Jazz Times Magazine, he has also published pieces in The Instrumentalist, and Tennessee Musician magazines.

A native of Fremont, Nebraska, Dr. Haar holds a Doctor of Musical Arts Degree from the University of Texas at Austin (2004) where he studied with the renowned saxophonist Harvey Pittel, a Masters of Music Degree (1996) and Bachelors of Music Degree (1994) from the University of Kansas where he studied with Vincent Gnojek, Dan Gailey and Dick Wright.



The Nebraska Jazz Orchestra was founded in 1975 and performs throughout Nebraska and the Midwest.  Tours to Europe have included England, France, Germany, Scotland, and a 1997 performance at the prestigious Montreux International Jazz Festival in Montreux, Switzerland.

Rules, Guidelines & Eligibility

·  Open to musicians who have not reached their 22nd birthday on or before February 5, 2010.
· Instrumentation:  Saxophones (Alto/Tenor/Baritone), Trumpets, Trombones, Piano, Bass, Drums, Guitar
· Selected musicians must furnish transportation, instruments (except piano)
· If selected, musicians MUST be available for the following:

REHEARSAL:  Sunday, January 31, 2010, 5:00 p.m. - 7:00 p.m., O'Donnell Auditorium, Nebraska Wesleyan University, Lincoln
REHEARSAL:  Thursday, February 4, 2010, 5:00 p.m.-6:30 p.m., O'Donnell Auditorium, Nebraska Wesleyan University, Lincoln
CONCERT: Friday, February 5, 2010, 7:30 p.m. @ The Cornhusker Marriott, 333 South 13th Street, Lincoln

How To Apply:

·  A completed printed copy of the PDF below and a $5.00 non-refundable application fee must be submitted to Nebraska Jazz Orchestra

·  Make checks payable to Nebraska Jazz Orchestra

·  Applications must be postmarked by Wednesday, December 2, 2009.

·  Upon receiving your application, the NJO will send audition music to you.

 

The Audition Process:

·  When you receive your audition music, prepare a recorded audition (Cassette or CD) and send it to the NJO.  Please include the following:

a.  Chromatic scale over the entire range of the instrument
b. 
Prepared piece supplied by the NJO                           
c. 
Improvised solo*  Optional, but highly recommended!   

*Can be 3-5 choruses of blues, or 2-3 choruses of a well-known standard, with live or recorded accompaniment, such as Jamey Aebersold.

·  Please include a note or announce what piece you have selected

·  Audition materials must be postmarked no later than Wednesday, January 6, 2010.  Materials will be returned if you provide a self-addressed return envelope with sufficient postage.

·  Audition results will be mailed to you by January 19, 2010.
