Trumpet Pyrotechniques

Join the Nebraska Jazz Orchestra as it presents the third concert of the 2011-2012 season, "Trumpet Pyrotechniques," featuring trumpet powerhouse Kirk Garrison as guest artist. This performance will also feature the 2012 Young Lions All-Star Band. Selections performed will include "What's the Meaning of This?," "The Messenger," 'Bernie's Tune," "Blue Daniel," "Joy Spring," "Nature Boy," and "Fascinating Rhythm," all Garrison's own arrangements.

"Trumpet Pyrotechniques" will be held Wednesday, February 1, 2012, at the Cornhusker Marriott, 333 South 13th Street in Lincoln, Nebraska at 7:30 p.m. Single admission tickets are $25 for Adults and $12.50 for Students and may be purchased by contacting the Nebraska Jazz Orchestra business office at (402) 477-8446 or njo@artsincorporated.org.

Kirk Garrison

A veteran of the Chicago jazz scene, trumpeter/arranger Kirk Garrison attended college in his home state of Minnesota before serving in the United States Air Force Band. After leaving the Air Force in 1992, he completed his masters degree in Jazz Studies at DePaul University where he is now a member of the jazz faculty. Kirk is in high demand as a performer, composer, teacher and arranger. He has received commissions from DePaul University, the Chicago String Ensemble, and the Millar Brass Ensemble at Northwestern University and most recently for internationally renowned jazz saxophonist Phil Woods.

As a member of the Lt. Dan Band featuring actor Gary Sinise, Kirk performs for scores of active duty military members, veterans and their families, including many charity organizations for disabled veterans. The band has toured extensively in the United States, Europe, Asia and the Middle East.

Other performance credits include the International Music Festival in Hue, Vietnam, the Ravinia Music Festival, the Chicago Blues Festival, Chicago Jazz Festival and numerous other venues throughout the country. Kirk also performs as a guest soloist and clinician/adjudicator at middle schools, high schools and colleges throughout the country. The Young Lions All-Star Band is an auditioned group comprised of outstanding student musicians from Nebraska and surrounding states. Students under the age of 21 are eligible to audition, and the most promising young musicians are selected to rehearse and perform at a Nebraska Jazz Orchestra concert with their renowned guest artist. The Young Lions All-Star Band is one of the Nebraska Jazz Orchestra's many educational outreach programs.
