The Nebraska Jazz Orchestra is proud to announce Alex Levitov as the 2002 winner of the Young Artist Competition. Alex is sixteen years old and plays saxophone in the jazz band at Lincoln Southeast. He’s been selected to play in numerous auditioned honor groups, including the All-State Jazz Band and the NJO’s Young Lions Band. Alex will perform with the Nebraska Jazz Orchestra on their Tuesday, March 5th concert which will be held at 7:30 pm at the Cornhusker Hotel. This concert will feature Big Band favorites. Alex will also receive $250.00. The runner-up is Michael Steinke who auditioned on trumpet. Michael attends Lincoln Southeast and will receive $100.00. Five finalists competed on Sunday, February 17th for the honor of winning the Young Jazz Artist award for 2002. Besides Alex and Michael, the other finalists were: Nathan Lenz of Lincoln High on alto sax, Bryan Ewing of Bellevue East on trumpet, and Tommy van den Berg of Lincoln Southeast on trombone.
