Nebraska Jazz Orchestra Presents

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE, DECEMBER 2006 NEBRASKA JAZZ ORCHESTRA PRESENTS ‘LEARNING FROM THE MASTER’ Contact: 402-477-8446 Join the Nebraska Jazz Orchestra for a night featuring young talent and a special Dixieland treat. Legendary Lincoln trumpeter Mac McCune will be joined by clarinet virtuoso Gary Gollner and trombonist Dan Strom for a special Dixieland performance. Mac will also be performing with the Nebraska Jazz Orchestra as well as the 2006 Young Lions All-Star Band. The Young Lions All-Star Band is an auditioned group of the area’s most talented young jazz musicians. Support for the Learning From The Master concert is provided by concert sponsors Farmers Mutual Insurance Company and the Dillon Foundation. The Nebraska Jazz Orchestra thanks Nebraska Diamond for its generous support of the year-round activities of the Nebraska Jazz Orchestra. The concert will be held Thursday, January 11, 2007 at the Embassy Suites Hotel, 1040 P Street in Lincoln, Nebraska at 7:30 p.m. Priority seating for season ticket holders and Jazz Club members is at 7:00 p.m., with general admission seating beginning at 7:15 p.m. Single admission tickets are $20 for Adults, $17 for Seniors, and $10 for Students, and may be purchased by contacting the Nebraska Jazz Orchestra business office at (402) 477-8446. Season tickets for the remainder of the 2006-2007 season are available for purchase at pro-rated prices. A pre-concert dinner will be held before the concert at the Embassy Suites at a cost of $22 per person. Mac McCune Upon hearing the exciting sounds put forth by the great Harry James, Mac McCune knew that the trumpet was to be his instrument of choice. Mac was 10 years old then, and has been blowing his own horn ever since. Lessons and orchestral participation through his high school and college years gave him the rudiments needed to play the basics of classical and popular music. The years since have allowed Mac to hone those skills and combine them with a “personal feel” that is his alone. Since the 60s, McCune has led his own groups, backed many top stars, and has performed in various locations throughout the U.S. He has performed several concerts as a featured artist with the Nebraska Jazz Orchestra. Mac has several CDs to his credit including the recently released album, The Horn. Gary Gollner Gary Gollner grew up in Chicago in the 1950s and listened to his dad play clarinet with some of the best traditional jazz and swing bands in the country. His love for traditional jazz led him to follow in his father’s footsteps playing traditional jazz clarinet. He began performing professionally in the Kansas City area in the late 1960s with George Winn’s “Storyville Seven” at the old Levee Bar. He began performing with the “New Red Onion Jazz Babies” in the late 1980s, playing at a variety of Kansas City venues as well as at jazz festivals nation wide. Gary met Mac McCune during that time period and has teamed up with Mac on many occasions over the years. Gary currently performs with Dan Strom and the rest of the “New Red Onion Jazz Babies” on Sunday evenings at Jardine’s Restaurant in Kansas City. He has also performed with Denver, Colorado’s “Queen City Jazz Band” at the “Little Apple Jazz Festival” in Manhattan, Kansas. Gary is a University of Nebraska graduate and works in Lincoln, Nebraska as a licensed psychotherapist. Dan Strom Trombonist Dan Strom lives in Independence, Missouri. He is a graduate of Southwest Missouri State University with a degree in Music Education. In addition to teaching, he has toured with such groups as Manheim Steamroller, Henry Mancini, Johnny Mathis and many others. He is principal trombonist at the Starlight Theater in Kansas City, Missouri, and has performed with the nationally known Kansas City traditional jazz band, the “New Red Onion Jazz Babies” for over fifteen years.
